My Working Day with Colin Hamilton, Tax Partner
2 June 2014

Working Day:

My working day typically starts just before 9am and finishes just before 6pm and I always try to get some fresh air at lunchtime in order to keep the batteries charged!

No two days are the same – my work can comprise of dealing with the tax effects of a major corporate deal or arguing technical issues with HMRC, to reclaiming excess tax suffered on bank interest. Tax is a complicated subject and I find that more time needs to be devoted to tax planning rather than just compliance work. It is always a challenge to find a more tax efficient means of completing transactions which can save the client a lot of money.

Tax is more about interpretation of the rules than numbers; and those rules keep changing which makes the job challenging at times!

Down Time:

I play table tennis for the Hull Veterans in the Yorkshire League and play at least twice a week. I am into genealogy as well and have traced both sides of my family back to the early 1800’s – I find it fascinating. Much of our down time at the moment is renovating our new but old home – and of course my two teenage children keep me busy in the usual style of Dad Taxi.

Marital Status: Married to Tracey for 20 years – 2 children, Becky (18) and James (16)

First Job: Shelf stacker and till operator at Grandways Stores.

Home: We recently moved to an Edwardian House on Beverley Road. It needs some work to modernise it, but it is a blank canvas that will eat into any free time we get!

Car: Vauxhall Insignia.

Book: My favourite author is Stephen King – The Stand is a great book, a story of good versus evil with many different strands coming together.

Music: Generally soft rock; Journey, Bruce Springsteen and Queen are among my most listened to artists.

Film: An old one, but well worth a watch is 12 Angry Men with Henry Fonda as the dissenting voice in a jury room.

Gadget: It has to be my iPad - it has everything you need!

Last Holiday: Love going on family holidays to Torquay. If you get the weather it is a wonderful place to go.
